The Oklahoma City Police Department is currently seeking applications for an upcoming Police Academy. Applications can be picked up Monday thru Friday 8am-4pm at any of the following locations or they can be downloaded online from

Any one of the four Patrol Divisions:

Hefner Division - 3924 N.W. 122nd Street Oklahoma City, OK 73120
Santa Fe Division - 9000 S. Santa Fe Oklahoma City, OK 73139
Springlake Division - 4116 N. Prospect Oklahoma City, OK 73111
Will Rogers Division - 3112 N. Grand Blvd. Oklahoma City, OK 73112

Applicant Requirements:

*Be a citizen of the United States.
*21-45 years of age. Applicants may complete an application and proceed in the hiring process at 20 years of age if they will be 21 by the starting date of the next academy class.
*Posses a Valid drivers license.
*Have Good moral character.
*Be Suitable emotional stability.
*Meet the requirements of the State Police Pension Board
*Posses a High School Diploma or GED. At the time you become eligible to test for the rank of Lieutenant you must have earned 60 college credit hours with at least a letter grade of "C" and a Bachelor's Degree to test for the rank of Captain.

You will be contacted by mail when your application has been received.  Applicants are responsible for keeping their address and phone information current with the Recruiting Unit. Steps in the application process

Physical Fitness Evaluation
Applicants will participate in a series of strength-related exercises and timed running events. Failure to achieve the required fitness level in any category will result in disqualification from further processing at that time. Applicants who fail are allowed to retest after six months.
All or part of the physical fitness evaluation may be administered again, prior to the beginning of recruit training, to ensure the applicant has maintained a proper fitness level.
The physical fitness and written examination are valid for one year.
The physical fitness examination includes:

27 Sit-Ups 1 Minute
300 Meter Run 68 Seconds
18 Standard Push-Ups No Time Limit
1.5 Mile Run 15 Minutes 20 Seconds

The written exam includes the following:
Watching a video, writing a report and answering 10 multiple choice questions in reference to the video
25 multiple-choice vocabulary and word usage questions
20 multiple-choice reading recall and comprehension questions
25 multiple-choice basic math questions
10 cognitive definition and logic measurements

It is important to prepare yourself for the physical fitness examination. If you do not pass either of these tests, your application will be suspended for six months.

Once an applicant has completed as well as passed the Physical Fitness Evaluation and the written exam they will be given a Background Investigation Book. When they receive the Background Investigations Book they will be given instructions on how it is to be completed.

After the applicant completes the Investigations Book and an Applicant Stability Rating will be established. The applicants application will be then assigned to a background investigator. Once applicants are considered viable candidates for the position of Police Officer they will begin a thorough background investigation.

When an applicant has passed the background investigation they will go before an employment assessment board. The assessment board's responsibility is to assess the applicant's qualities, personal characteristics and ability to perform as a police officer. A list of acceptable applicants is referred to the Chief of Police for his review. An applicant rejected at this stage will be notified by the Recruiter of this decision and advised of any opportunities for re-application.

Final Selection
The Chief of Police selects the applicants who will attend the Police Academy, pending successful completion of the medical examination and the Minnesota Multiphastic Personality Inventory (MMPI) exam. Should the Chief of Police reject an applicant, they will be notified by the Recruiter of this decision and advised of any opportunities for re-application.

Psychological Evaluation
Applicants will be evaluated for psychological suitability. This evaluation will include the completion of the California Personality Inventory (CPI). Selected applicants will undergo a comprehensive psychological evaluation by a trained psychologist.

Medical Examination
Applicants must meet the Oklahoma Police Pension and Retirement System Physical Standards. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) will also be administered.
Oklahoma City Police Department Academy
Hired applicants will begin employment as a Police Recruit in the Oklahoma City Police Department. An academy lasts approximately 28 weeks and is a non-residential academy. You are a paid employee while you attend and your uniforms and equipment are supplied to you.

OKC Police Hiring Ambassadors & Handicap Parking Enforcement

The Oklahoma City Police Department will be accepting applications for the position of

OKC Ambassador from January 10^th through January 28^th, 2011. Application Forms can be picked up and turned in at the Bricktown Police Substation located at 219 E. Main St., weekdays

from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Monday, January 17^th will be closed in recognition of the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.

Ambassadors are part-time, temporary, uniformed, civilian employees – no benefits. Ambassadors typically work six hour shifts between 10:00 am and 10:00 pm in the Bricktown/Downtown area, seven days a week, year round. Applicants must be willing to work any shift, including holidays and weekends. Ambassadors are allowed, but not guaranteed, 32 hours per week at a rate of pay of $9.00 per hour. Primary duties include:

Communicating with citizens to provide general information or public services
Identifying and reporting information to the police by radio or telephone
Directing traffic during special events, rush hour periods or in emergencies

Applicants must satisfactorily complete a polygraph, police background check and drug screen. They must also attend 40 hours of combined classroom and field training. Additional information on these positions is available on the attached job vacancy announcement.

Also, during the above dates and times, the Oklahoma City Police Department will be accepting applications for the position of Handicap Parking Enforcement Specialist (H.P.E.S.). The H.P.E.S. is a part-time, temporary, uniformed, civilian employee – no benefits. The H.P.E.S. can work up to 10 days during a two week pay period and is paid $16.00 per day. There are no minimum or maximum hours specified during a work day. Primary duties include:

Enforcement of City, State and Federal ordinances, statutes and laws pertaining to disabled parking and fire lanes, issuing citations for violations thereof, and testifying in Court regarding such citations
Providing information concerning the use of disabled parking and fire lanes
Distributing applications for permits and collecting expired permits
Investigating and responding to complaints from citizens

Meet Officer Kristina Downey

My initial plan was to join the military. That plan ended when I got married at a young age and started a family. For the next few years, I worked various jobs that allowed me to spend time with my children. At the same time, I was the account manager for my husband’s business. To earn additional money, I began working the graveyard shift at a local restaurant. At the time, I did not realize that job would lead me to my destiny.

Police officers from the Oklahoma City Police Department would frequently eat in the restaurant on their meal break. During my interactions with them, I realized police officers are normal people like everyone else. As they talked about the various calls they handled, police work began to sound like an exciting and interesting career. I began to ask the officers different questions about their profession and the Oklahoma City Police Department. The officers were all very kind, and provided me with a lot of good information.

I began to realize that a career in law enforcement might be the right move for me. To investigate this option further, I participated in the Oklahoma City Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy. After graduating from CPA Class #016, I was absolutely sure I wanted to join the Oklahoma City Police Department.

I applied, went through the hiring process, and was accepted into OCPD Academy Class #125. I graduated, and successfully completed the Field Training Officer Program. At present, I am working the graveyard shift in one of the patrol divisions. I have completed my one-year probationary period, and am living my dream. Everything I went through to get here was worth it. I’ve always said that we don’t know who we are until we see what we can do. I’m extremely thankful I was given the opportunity to discover policing! In the process, I discovered me!
